CLINTON, Ark.—Authorities say a man convicted last month of traveling from Colorado and murdering his wife has escaped from the Van Buren County jail.
The county’s Sheriff’s Office says Rodney Lee Jones escaped Wednesday morning. Jones is serving a life prison sentence without the possibility of parole.
Prosecutors said during Jones’ trial that he drove from Colorado to Van Buren County in September 2008 and shot 33-year-old Orzona Fischer to death in the home she shared with her three children and new husband. Authorities have said Fischer was shot as she cut her new husband’s hair.
In the days after the shooting, Jones was arrested in the Denver suburb of Thornton and extradited to Arkansas. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
