The cost for employer-sponsored medical coverage rose 6.9 percent this year, much higher than the rate of broader inflation and the sharpest increase since 2004, according to a national survey released Wednesday.
The average benefit cost per employee rose to $9,562, according to the annual survey by benefits-consulting firm Mercer.
Employers expect 2011 actual costs to increase by another 6.4 percent. Total costs are forecast to rise about 10 percent, but most employers will make coverage changes to limit actual increases.
Colorado’s average cost per employee in 2010 was $9,795, 2.4 percent higher than the national average.
