DENVER—After a slow start, the Denver Rescue Mission has exceeded its goal of 6,000 turkeys for its Thanksgiving dinner.

The Denver Post reports that the Rescue Mission had collected 7,625 turkeys by noon Wednesday. The mission will donate the extra turkeys to other organizations.

The Denver Rescue Mission reported late last week that it had only 212 turkeys and was seeking donations.

But another area food bank could use some help. The Weld Food Bank in Greeley says it has received donations for many of the Thanksgiving dinner staples, but is lagging in the turkey department.

The Tribune reports the food bank has 2,200 requests for the birds this holiday season. That’s nearly double last year’s total.
