Some of the most successful golfers produced by the University of Colorado men’s program were recruited from within the state — Hale Irwin, Dale Douglass, Steve Jones, Jonathan Kaye — and current CU coach Roy Edwards hopes that magic will be replicated.
This week, Edwards rounded up the signatures of four in-state high school seniors during the early signing period: John Ahern of D’Evelyn, Tyler Engel of Regis Jesuit, David Oraee of Greeley and Drew Trujillo of Montrose.
Oraee (Class 5A) and Ahern (4A) won individual state championships in October. Trujillo finished runner-up in the 4A meet as a junior and was 10th this fall. Engel helped Regis claim the 2010 5A team championship.
Edwards likes to recruit individuals who have played sports other than golf. Oraee and Ahern play varsity basketball. Engel’s background includes baseball and tennis. Until last year, Trujillo had concentrated more on baseball (as a catcher) than on golf. Tom Kensler, The Denver Post

Waid Ibrahim scored the winner off an assist from Danny Barrera in the 104th minute. Gauchos keeper Luis Silva faced four shots from DU, only one on goal.
