
A former Fort Carson soldier was killed Wednesday in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan when insurgents attacked his unit with improvised explosives.
Spc. Justin E. Culbreth, 26, was serving with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky., a unit hit hard in the past week. Twelve soldiers in the division have died since Nov. 11 in Afghanistan.
Culbreth was stationed at Fort Carson a few years ago and met his wife here in Colorado, said his father, Walter Culbreth, of Wentzville, Mo. He listed Colorado Springs as his home in Army records.
He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Culbreth; son Brandon, 5; step-daughters Katelyn Carbaugh, Mariah Bailey and Hannah Carbaugh, and step-son Cole Carbaugh, all of Clarksville, Tenn. He also is survived by his parents, Walter and Cheryl Culbreth of Wentzville, Mo.
