If ever there was a cog in the wheel of pop music, is that — and not necessarily in a bad way. Upbeat, driving rhythms are the recipe for his songs, which stay in your mind like that annoying chime that greets you when you power up your Dell and Windows 7.0 kicks in.
But Brandon Flowers needed a break. As seems to be the trend of hardworking front men of our time, he has decided to branch off from the wild success of his main gig, the Killers, and produce a solo album.
He brought that solo act to the Thursday night — with opener Fran Healy, of Travis — to a house packed with screaming fans. Fans who could care less if he was accompanied by his usual band mates. Fans who just wanted to hear the music.
The performance matched any Killers’ show. With its giant light display and pulsating beats, it seemingly could have fit have sold out the Pepsi Center, but the Ogden stage sufficed. And to the Killers’ credit, the loudest the crowd got was during the encore when Flowers blazed into that band’s staple, “Mr. Brightside.”
