FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Despite a dry start to the fall, the northern Colorado snowpack is well above average and expected to get even deeper.

The Coloradoan reports that the snowpack is nearly 200 percent of average at some monitoring sites in western Larimer County. The U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service data show the overall snowpack in the South Platte Basin is 157 percent of average.

The snowpack percentage is measured against a 30-year average. Melting snow contributes about 80 percent of the water in Colorado rivers, streams, lakes and reservoirs.

The story’s different in southwest Colorado, where the snowpack is only 61 percent of average.
