SILT, Colo.—A second school in Garfield County has shut off its drinking water after tests showed high chemical levels.
Cactus Valley Elementary in Silt is using bottled water after the town water supply violated state drinking water standards. The water exceeded limits for a class of chemicals called total trihalomethanes.
The (Glenwood Springs) Post Independent reports that this is the second time this year that Silt’s water has been in violation.
According to a letter sent to town residents, extended exposure to those chemicals can lead to problems with the liver, kidneys or central nervous system.
Pregnant and nursing women have been advised not to drink the water. Silt officials say water improvements are underway.
