COLORADO SPRINGS — A 19-year-old man was fatally shot in a brawl that broke out as a large party at a home was winding down early Sunday, a friend of the victim said.
The victim was shot outside 905 S. 25th St., where roughly 50 teens and young adults had gathered for a party, said Colorado Springs police spokesman Sgt. David Edmondson.
Police have not released the name and age of the victim, but Cody Burns identified the victim as Jack Smith, a longtime friend.
Burns, 23, said he and Smith were leaving to go to another party, when someone called them a name and a fistfight ensued.
Burns said that when several people followed them outside, Smith stepped between him and the shooter, “trying to tell him to calm down, chill out.”
“And I was screaming at him . . . run away,” Burns said. “The guy just pulled the trigger. He shot my friend.”
