CHEYENNE, Colo.—Good news for Wyoming drivers this winter—some will be allowed to drive on closed roads with permission of state officials.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation announced Monday a new “Authorized Travel” program by which drivers can apply to drive on roads closed during winter storms. Drivers who get permission will get text messages and e-mails from the state informing them where they can drive.

Approved drivers will check in with a trooper or Department of Transportation employee on roads closed for most travelers.

The state says that vehicle type will not affect whether drivers get permission, but highway officials continue to suggest that winter drivers in Wyoming have four-wheel drive or snow tires.
