Avalanche center and former University of Denver star Paul Stastny on Wednesday confirmed that Terry Martin, the father of injured Pioneers senior Jesse Martin, suffered a heart attack last weekend in Edmonton, Alberta. Terry Martin underwent surgery to place two stents into arteries and is recovering at his Edmonton home.

Jesse Martin, who was persuaded to attend DU by Stastny, suffered a concussion, temporary paralysis and potentially fatal fractures to his C2 vertebra in an Oct. 30 game at North Dakota. He underwent surgery Nov. 8 in St. Paul, Minn., and returned to Denver on Nov. 15 with almost complete use and feeling of his extremities.

Terry Martin was with his son for most of his ordeal. Terry was in Las Vegas when he learned of his son’s injury and went to Minneapolis on the first flight out of Las Vegas on Oct. 31. Terry accompanied his son on his return to Denver and helped settle Jesse into Englewood’s Craig Hospital for a week’s worth of rehabilitation. Terry returned to Edmonton last week.

Wallace rejoining Rapids.

The Rapids lost defender Anthony Wallace in Major League Soccer’s expansion draft and then reacquired him in a postdraft trade.

Wallace was selected by the Portland Timbers with the seventh overall pick. The Rapids reacquired him for allocation money. Because Wallace was selected in the draft, Colorado was able to protect another player, midfielder Wells Thompson.

The Rapids made another move, acquiring midfielder Sanna Nyassi, whom the Vancouver Whitecaps had taken with the first pick of the expansion draft, in exchange for an international roster spot.

Boulder cyclist suspended.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency announced that cyclist Chuck Coyle of Boulder has accepted a two-year suspension for his purchase, possession and use of synthetic erythropoietin (EPO) and insulin growth factor (IGF-1).
