MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s census shows the population has grown more quickly than expected, in part because of a drop in the number of people leaving to seek work.

According to preliminary data released Thursday by the National Institute for Statistics and Geography, Mexico had 112.3 million inhabitants as of July — 3.6 million more than experts had projected.

The head of the institute, Eduardo Sojo, said Mexico had been losing about 500,000 people a year to migration but that that number has likely fallen by about half. The global economic crisis, particularly the U.S. slump, has cut into the jobs available for migrants.
