Grand Junction firefighters worked more than six hours Friday removing debris from the inside of a Salvation Army thrift store where the second floor collapsed just after 3 p.m. They wanted to make sure no one was underneath.
Initially, unconfirmed reports of a trapped shopper made crews treat the cleanup as a possible rescue mission. Just before 10 p.m., fire crews were able to confirm that no one was crushed. The two-story building remained unstable.
One firefighter was treated for a minor injury, said Mike Page, spokesman for the Grand Junction Fire Department.
Twenty-two people were inside the building at 1038 Ute Ave. when the ceiling collapsed. One person was treated at the scene for respiratory difficulties.
The part of the ceiling that collapsed spans about one-eighth of the building. Yesenia Robles, The Denver Post
