DETROIT — Red Wings forward Mike Modano will be out indefinitely after undergoing surgery Saturday to repair a laceration on his right wrist.
Modano was injured during the second period of Friday’s game at Columbus when he was cut by a skate blade.
“It’s a real fluke injury,” general manager Ken Holland said. “He was defending in our zone, stumbled and lost his balance and got the skate inside the glove. He got a severed tendon and some slight damage to a nerve. It was significant damage.
“Doctor won’t give us a timetable — wants to see how it heals. Surgery went well, but we have no real idea how long he’ll be out. I don’t even want to speculate.”
Modano’s expression after the game made that clear.
“You can just tell on a person’s face,” teammate Todd Bertuzzi said. “I felt for him.”
Lupul on comeback trail
ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Ducks assigned right wing Joffrey Lupul to their AHL affiliate in Syracuse for perhaps the final step in his lengthy comeback from a blood infection.
