COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A hearing to determine whether there’s enough evidence to try an Army private accused of shooting and killing a Taliban leader is underway at Fort Carson in Colorado.

The Gazette in Colorado Springs reports that prosecutors say David Lawrence was calculated on Oct. 17 when he’s accused of firing a single shot into the head of a prisoner north of Khandahar. But Lawrence’s attorney says the soldier, an Indiana native, is taking medication for schizophrenia and isn’t mentally fit to stand trial.

On Tuesday, Sgt. Jaroslab Diaz said two other soldiers told him that Lawrence had reported having homicidal and suicidal thoughts before the shooting. Speaking by phone from Afghanistan, Diaz also testified that Lawrence said he shot the leader.
