Powertech Inc. will be able to drill a test well in a proposed uranium drilling site in northwestern Weld County, the Greeley Tribune reports, but that’s all the company can do.

The Environmental Protection Agency issued the company an injection-well permit that will allow it to reinject groundwater from an aquifer pump test, according to a news release.

Powertech owns the mineral rights to more than 5,700 acres of land in Weld County near Nunn. It has planned since 2007 to begin drilling in the uranium-rich area, but has met opposition on all sides.

According to the Tribune, the latest issue has been new state rules that enforce strict groundwater cleaning rules, which prompted the company to sue the state Mined Land Reclamation Board last month. That case is scheduled to be reviewed in Denver District Court next month.
