LAKE LOUISE, Alberta — Vail’s Lindsey Vonn got some revenge on Maria Riesch on Sunday when the American star dominated a women’s super-G for her first World Cup victory of the season.
Vonn, 26, smashed the opposition with a winning time of 1 minute, 20.72 seconds for her eighth victory at Lake Louise and 34th overall.
Germany’s Riesch, a two-time Olympic champion who had stunned Vonn to win the downhills on Friday and Saturday on the same trail, was a distant second in 1:21.55. Julia Mancuso added to U.S. joy with a third-place finish in 1:21.61. Alice McKennis of Glenwood Springs was 22nd.
“I wanted revenge today,” Vonn said. “Today I had a strong run. (But) it wasn’t perfect, I can still improve.”
Riesch was not disappointed about missing a victory hat trick in Alberta, saying: “I am very satisfied. Lindsey had a super race. But I am on a super-G podium for the first time in almost three years.”
Sunday’s race was overshadowed by the crash of Slovenian Marusa Ferk, who was airlifted from the scene. The nature of her injury was not immediately known.
Riesch maintained first place in the World Cup overall standings with 514 points (through six races) and is ahead of the three-time reigning champion Vonn, who has 345.
The women’s World Cup continues Saturday in St. Moritz, Switzerland, with another super-G.
