GREELEY — A man who tried to rob a convenience store early Wednesday using rocks fled when the clerk pulled out a cellphone to call police.

“He demanded money from the clerk,” Greeley police Sgt. Joe Tymko wych said. “And when the clerk didn’t respond, he pulled some quarter-sized rocks from his pocket and began throwing them. He hit the clerk three times but didn’t injure him.”

The would-be robber also tried to steal the cash register. The incident happened at the 7-Eleven at West 16th Street and Ninth Avenue.
