Severe weather on Interstate 70 west of Denver has closed highways and caused backups.
The Colorado Department of Transportation reports that I-70 closed in both directions just after 6 p.m. due to severe weather. Westbound lanes have been reopened to Copper Mountain “while finishing touches are completed on reopening Vail Pass,” according to CDOT.
Eastbound lanes of I-70 remain closed over Vail Pass, but but have reopened from Silverthorne to the Eisenhower tunnel.
U.S. Highway 6 is also closed in both directions over Loveland Pass due to severe weather.
State patrol spokeswoman Heather Cobbler said none of the accidents so far have been serious, but added that many other smaller roads are also closed.
The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather warning until 11 a.m. Saturday for west Jackson and west Grand counties including Berthoud Pass, Winter Park and the Eisenhower tunnel.
The weather service predicts significant snowfall and gusty winds up to 65 mph in the higher mountain passes.
