This is another great handmade gift idea courtesy of Morrison art instructor Kippi Mack-vonDuhn.

SUPPLIES

Access to oven or large toaster oven

Wine glasses, tumblers, glass jars, ornaments or another clear glass novelty

Rubbing alcohol or white vinegar

Paper towels

Notebook paper for sketching designs

Enamel heat-set acrylic paint (available in craft and hobby stores) in several colors

Fine tip paint brushes

Paper towels

Paper, pen, colored pencils or markers

Painter’s tape

Uncooked rice

Cup of warm (not hot) water for rinsing brushes

DIRECTIONS
1. Create a design and draw it on the notepaper, keeping the design small enough to fit on the glass.

2. Cut out the design, and tape it inside the glass. Fill the glass with uncooked rice to hold it securely in place.

3. Clean the outside glass surface, using rubbing alcohol or vinegar. This helps seal the paint.

4. Set up your work area: Cup of warm water, brushes, paper towels and paint.

5. Copy your design by painting the outline of your drawing. Use colored paint to fill in the open areas, being careful to thoroughly rinse your brush before changing colors.

6. Let the paint dry 24 to 47 hours before heat-setting the design.

7. Put the painted glass into a cold, not pre-heated, oven. (Using a pre-heated oven may break your glass.)

8. Follow the instructions on your paint bottle, and set your oven to the specified temperature and bake the paint onto the glass for the recommended baking time.

9. Turn the oven off when the baking is complete.

10. Leave the glasses in the oven. Do not open the oven door. Allow the oven and the glass to cool completely before opening the oven door. The glass will break if it cools too quickly.

Finished glasses are dishwasher-safe.
