BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Land grabs in public parks by poor families demanding decent housing spread to two more properties in Argentina’s capital Monday as politicians pointed fingers and police declined to evict them, fearing bloodshed.

The illegal occupations now involve more than 5,000 people, and at least three squatters have been killed in violent confrontations with angry neighbors.

The squatters say they won’t leave until the government gives them subsidies for decent housing in or around Buenos Aires, where nearly half of Argentina’s 40 million people now share space with an ever-growing flood of migrants from nearby countries.
