FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Turns out this was one costly trip for Sal Alosi.
The Jets assistant coach who tripped a Dolphins player during a game was suspended by the team Monday night without pay for the rest of the season, including the playoffs, and fined an additional $25,000.
Alosi, the strength and conditioning coach, began serving his suspension immediately and will have no access to the team’s practice facility.
“I accept responsibility for my actions and respect the team’s decision,” Alosi said in a statement.
General manager Mike Tannenbaum said the team spoke with the NFL about the incident, and the league will issue no further discipline.
Alosi stuck out his left knee on the sideline and tripped Dolphins cornerback Nolan Carroll, who was covering a punt in the third quarter of Miami’s 10-6 victory Sunday.
Carroll, a rookie, fell to the turf and lay there for several minutes before walking off.
• Jets starting right tackle Damien Woody is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery Wednesday on his right knee, sidelining him for at least one game and possibly the rest of the regular season. He will be replaced by veteran Wayne Hunter.
Rodgers’ return unclear
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Even with Green Bay’s playoff hopes in jeopardy, coach Mike McCarthy insists the team will err on the side of caution when evaluating Aaron Rodgers’ second concussion of the season.
Rodgers was expected to begin the evaluation protocol for head injuries Monday. The quarterback’s availability for Sunday’s game at New England remains unclear.
“We’re not going to take any chances,” McCarthy said. “We’ll always take the high side of caution in these types of situations.”
Rodgers left Sunday’s game at Detroit shortly after he was hit hard on back-to-back plays in the second quarter, a scramble and a sack. He was replaced by Matt Flynn, and the Packers went on to lose 7-3.
Skelton to start again
TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said rookie John Skelton will remain the starting quarterback after the Cardinals ended their seven- game losing streak with a 43-13 victory over Denver.
“I think we’ll stick with what our plan all along has been,” Whisenhunt said, “and that’s to play the best player, the player that gives us the best chance to win. I think right now that’s John Skelton.”
So the 6-foot-6 fifth- round draft pick from Fordham will be at the controls when the Cardinals play at Carolina on Sunday, even if former starter Derek Anderson (concussion) is cleared to play.
Footnotes.
Redskins safety LaRon Landry is done for the season with a left Achilles tendon injury.
• Seahawks wide receiver Deon Butler will be placed on injured reserve, as expected, after suffering a broken right leg against San Francisco.
• Eagles rookie defensive end Brandon Graham will miss the rest of the season with a torn knee ligament.
• The Vikings-Eagles game will replace the Chargers-Bengals matchup as the Sunday night game Dec. 26 under the NFL’s flexible scheduling policy. The San Diego-Cincinnati game will move to 2:05 p.m. MST on CBS.
