Colorado School of Mines football star Marc Schiechl was the runner-up for the Gene Upshaw NCAA Division II lineman of the year award.
Schiechl, an All-America defensive lineman and a Bear Creek High School graduate, received the second-highest number of points (214) and first-place votes (27) in balloting for the award. The 6-foot-3, 260-pound senior set the Division II record for career sacks with 45.
Slippery Rock senior center Brandon Fusco (266 points, 29 first-place votes) won the award.
Cunliffe signs with Chorley FC.
Former Fort Lewis men’s soccer star John Cunliffe signed a professional contract to play with Chorley FC in England. Cunliffe was a three-time All-American for the Skyhawks from 2004-06 and led Fort Lewis to the Division II national championship as a junior. He played two seasons in Major League Soccer with Chivas USA and San Jose.

The Colorado Mammoth will start selling tickets to its eight regular- season home games today at 10 a.m.

The Mammoth’s regular-season opener is Jan. 8 at the Pepsi Center against the defending National Lacrosse League champion Washington Stealth.
