COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A statue honoring a former slave who moved West after the Civil War is awaiting repairs in Colorado Springs after a suspected drunken driver crashed into it in July.
The bronze statue which stood outside the Pioneers Museum honors William Seymour, who became El Paso County’s first black juror in 1903. It was knocked off its moorings in the crash.
The statue is in storage while the museum begins a $2,000 restoration.
The (Colorado Springs) Gazette reports that officials have only recently found a similar bench to replace the one that stood next to the statue. The bench was a popular lunchtime spot.
The suspected drunk driver faces drunk driving and reckless driving charges.
