PUEBLO, Colo.—A 3-year-old boy is dead after a fire at an apartment in Pueblo.
The Pueblo Chieftain reports that the boy was found unresponsive and not breathing in a closet of a bedroom where a mattress caught fire Monday.
Fire Chief Chris Riley said that the boy’s grandmother tried to rescue him but couldn’t because of heavy smoke.
Investigators say the boy apparently had access to matches. They also say a smoke detector in the apartment wasn’t working because it had a battery missing.
