FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A Colorado State program that pairs aspiring veterinarians with elderly pet owners is waiting to hear if it wins a $25,000 grant through an online contest.

The Pets Forever program pairs students interested in becoming veterinarians with elderly or sick pet owners. The students provide in-home care so that the elderly can keep their pets at home longer.

Research shows that pet ownership can alleviate depression and loneliness for sick people, and even lowers hospital admission rates.

The Pets Forever is one of four animal-related charities competing for votes for a grant from Heska, a Loveland company that provides medical supplies for veterinarians. The contest ends Wednesday.
