DENVER—A doctor has been appointed to the state Senate to replace Democrat Chris Romer, who’s leaving to run for Denver mayor.

A Democratic vacancy committee chose Dr. Irene Aguilar of Denver out of six candidates Monday.

Romer, the son of former Gov. Roy Romer, will officially resign his seat at the end of the year. He is among five candidates who have announced plans to run to succeed Mayor John Hickenlooper, who was elected governor in November.

Hickenlooper will stay on the job until his Jan. 11 inauguration as governor to avoid a special election. Deputy Mayor Bill Vidal will become acting mayor until the regular election in May.
