KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Keith Benson, last season’s Summit League player of the year, had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead Oakland to an 89-82 victory over No. 7 Tennessee on Tuesday night.

“We’re not scared of anybody,” Oakland coach Greg Kampe said. “We weren’t intimidated by the No. 7 team in the country because we had just played Michigan State, and we should have won that game.”

The Volunteers (7-1) used a 14-2 run to take a 50-39 halftime lead. But instead of falling apart, the Golden Grizzlies (6-5) dialed things up in the second half with 57.1 percent shooting to the Volunteers’ 34.4 percent.

The Vols held a 76-68 lead with 7:18 left, but then went cold for over five minutes. They tried to regain control with physical play in the paint, but it backfired as they got called for foul after foul while failing to come away with points or rebounds.

Oakland used a 13-0 run of mostly free throws, and a layup by Will Hudson gave the Grizzlies an 81-76 lead they would not relinquish.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Cardinals (8-1) shot 32 percent, were outrebounded 46-26 and made just one field goal over the final 8:30 as the Dragons (7-1) posted their first victory over a top-25 team since 2006.

No. 2 Baylor 65, No. 6 Tennessee 54

WACO, Texas — Brittney Griner had 21 points, nine blocks and disrupted nearly everything the Lady Vols (9-2) wanted to do, freshman Odyssey Sims added a season-high 24 points and the Lady Bears (10-1) never trailed before a crowd of 10,569 — the most ever for a basketball game at Baylor, men’s or women’s.
