A man tried for the 1977 rape and killing of a woman in Greeley has been sentenced to life in prison.
A jury deliberated for a few hours before finding Marcello Maldonado-Perez guilty of felony first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping and first-degree sexual assault on Thursday. He was found not guilty of first-degree murder after deliberation.
Convenience store clerk Mary Pierce was abducted Aug. 25, 1977. The 22-year-old’s body was found two days later in a cornfield west of Greeley. She had been raped and stabbed 17 times.
The big break in the case came last year. Police arrested Maldonado-Perez last December in Charlotte, Fla., after his DNA was linked to the cold case.
