Three of the nation’s leading civil rights groups have endorsed the proposed merger of Comcast and NBC Universal in exchange for promises of increased diversity on the part of the media company.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Urban League and the National Action Network on Friday announced an agreement with Comcast that includes commitments to support diversity in the media marketplace, particularly with regard to African-Americans.

Comcast committed to adding four new African-American-owned channels while also increasing African-American-targeted programming. NBC Universal pledged to increase the number of minorities on the writing staff and in news and public affairs programming.

Comcast last year announced its intention to acquire 51 percent of NBC Universal. The deal remains under review by the Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department.
