VAL GARDENA, Italy — Michael Walchhofer won a World Cup super-G race on the Saslong course Friday.

Walchhofer finished in 1 minute, 34.35 seconds for his second win of the season to take the lead in the World Cup overall and super-G standings.

Bode Miller lost time early in his run and was 16th, 2.1 seconds behind Walchhofer.

Austria has won four of the eight men’s World Cup races this season, including Walchhofer’s downhill victory last month at Lake Louise, Canada.

“The first victory at Lake Louise was really important. It takes a lot of pressure from us, and you can see how different a season can go with a good start,” Walchhofer said.

Stephan Keppler of Germany got a career-best second place, trailing by 0.67. Canadian Erik Guay, the defending World Cup super-G champion, was 0.81 back in third.

Walchhofer leads overall with 249 points, 11 ahead of teammate Benjamin Raich, who placed fourth.

Women’s race postponed

VAL D’ISÈRE, France — The women’s World Cup super-G was called off because of heavy snow. Weather conditions are expected to improve in time for today’s downhill and Sunday’s super combined.
