DENVER—A Denver hospital is considering a plan to only handle baby deliveries in cases of emergencies or trauma.

The board at St. Anthony Central Hospital approved a recommendation to end regular obstetrics and the Centura Health board will make a final decision in February. The Denver Post reports that St. Anthony obstetrics handles more than 700 births a year. But hospital officials say obstetrics needs about 2,200 deliveries a year to be financially stable.

Officials say other Denver hospitals are becoming high-profile baby centers but business at St. Anthony is declining.
