DURANGO, Colo.—Residents in La Plata County reported seeing almost double the number of bears this year compared to 2009.

A group called Bear Smart Durango said in a report this week that county residents reported more than 1,160 bear sightings this year. Last year, the number of sightings reported was 616.

Bear Smart Durango founder Bryan Peterson tells The Durango Herald that the increase in sightings may be due to a dry summer and loss of natural food that makes bears search for food in garbage cans around neighborhoods.

Peterson says most of the sightings of bears rummaging through trash in 2010 happened in Durango.
