Getting your player ready...

Ultimately, it’s the little things. Any legitimate winter outerwear manufacturer understands things such as seam taping, waterproof zippers and powder skirts to keep the snow out of your skivvies.

But the new Quantum Jacket hard shell (MSRP: $350) is more proof that Denver- based Flylow really gets it. The evidence is in those little things, such as a powder skirt made with a flexible lycra connection that stretches as you move, zips out for spring tours or summer storms and snaps into its own dedicated storage space when it’s zipped in but not in use.

Seven pockets offer space to stash almost anything, including climbing skins. A functional freeride fit makes layering easy and elastic “powder guard” snaps attach to belt loops to keep the shell from riding up. Oversized 16- inch pit zips handle overheating. The hood is helmet-compatible, but three-point cinch system controls fit with one or without.

Combine all of that with standard “big things,” such as Level 5 Dupont DWR waterproofing, a light but tough, breathable nylon shell fabric and sturdy, reliable zippers, and the Quantum could be the closest we’ve seen to the ultimate lightweight hard shell.
