In a long-running Denver-area tradition, a bell ringer with the Salvation Army has received the first gold coin of this holiday season.

A South African Krugerrand, valued at about $1,400, was dropped into a red kettle at a Walmart near West 120th Avenue and Vrain Street in Broomfield, the Salvation Army announced.

Clair Harger, a bell ringer for the past three years, received the coin Wednesday evening.

Her kettle last year netted a platinum ring worth about $1,200, the Salvation Army said. In the metro area last year, several valuable coins were donated by passers- by, including Krugerrands and a couple of rare early-1900s $20 Liberty gold coins. Kieran Nicholson, The Denver Post
