PEÑA BLANCA, N.M. — A Catholic community northeast of Albuquerque re-introduced a type of Christmas celebration this year — Las Posadas.
It involves a group going door to door, singing a song and asking to be let inside as a re-enactment of Mary and Joseph searching for an inn.
The group recently trekked through a snowstorm with Sylvester the donkey in tow, as they did every night from Dec. 16 to Christmas Eve.
Some said Mexican immigrants revived the interest in old practices that many native New Mexico families share with immigrants.
“The Catholic faith that we all grew up with brings us together,” said Henry Dominguez, 38, a lifelong resident of Peña Blanca.
