The pilot and sole occupant of a small aircraft that crashed in Larimer County on Monday afternoon has been identified as 50-year-old Charles R. Cullum.

The Larimer County coroner’s office said Cullum, of Lyons, died of multiple blunt-force trauma. It listed the manner of death as an accident.

The plane — a 1962 Cessna 210 — went down about 3 p.m. in rugged terrain near Carter Lake, starting a 2-acre fire. Shortly before he crashed, Cullum said, “Mayday, mayday, mayday,” then gave the plane’s identification number, according to Allen Kenitzer, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. Kenitzer said Cullum said “mayday” one more time before radio transmission was lost.
