COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A New Year’s Eve tradition dating back to 1922 is continuing on Pikes Peak.
At midnight, members of the AdAmAn Club will set off fireworks on the summit—14,115 above sea level. The Gazette in Colorado Springs reports the climbers started their trek Thursday, hiking eight miles from Manitou Springs to Barr Camp, where they stayed overnight.
The climbers will finish Friday, climbing from about 12,000 feet to the top of Pikes Peak. The New Year’s Eve ritual started when five local climbing buffs set out for the summit and set a fire at the top.
Since then, a new climber has been added each year, giving the group its name—AdAmAn. Members will carry about 100 pounds of fireworks with them.
