FORT CARSON, Colo.—Members of a Colorado National Guard medical unit are getting ready to head to Afghanistan for a year.

The 928th Area Support Medical Company is based in both Denver and Montrose and its 85 members include medical professionals, police officers, construction workers and college students.

People in Montrose surprised them with a community sendoff Monday. The Montrose Daily Press reports that police and an honor guard escorted their buses into town and friends, family and community members were waiting to shake their hands when they arrived.

A departure ceremony is also planned Tuesday at Fort Carson.

Members will first head to Fort Lewis, Wash. for language and cultural training before deploying to Afghanistan later this month.
