The Rapids went back to the future Monday, signing Tyrone Marshall. The veteran defender was a first- round draft pick of the Rapids in 1998.

The Major League Soccer champions signed Marshall after acquiring him via the MLS re-entry process last month. Marshall (6-feet-2, 195 pounds) is in his 13th MLS year. The Florida International product has twice been named an MLS all-star (2003 and 2005) and won the MLS Cup with Los Angeles in 2002 and 2005. He has 70 caps with the Jamaican national team.

Marshall, 36, was traded to Miami in his rookie season after playing in one game with the Rapids.

Mountaineers select football coach.

Jas Bains is Western State’s new head football coach. His promotion was announced Monday. He was the Mountaineers’ defensive and special-teams coordinator in 2010.

“This is a great opportunity to turn this program around and bring back the winning tradition of Western State football,” Bains said. “It’s going to be fun and it’s going to take a lot of hard work, but I look forward to getting started and moving forward.”

Before coming to Western State, Bains was a member of the coaching staff at Chadron State, a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference power. He was a part of the Eagles’ national quarterfinal runs in 2006 and 2007 and a part of three undefeated RMAC championship teams.

Bains was a defensive back at Fresno State from 2001-04 and played in three bowl games with the Bulldogs.
