The six-way race to replace retiring state Sen. Al White in Senate District 8 was settled Monday night by a Republican vacancy committee.
Jean White of Hayden beat out Jeff Fry and Bob McConnell of Steamboat Springs, Kay Meyring of Walden, Shannon Stowe of Glenwood Springs and T. Wright Dickinson of Maybell.
Jean White is the wife of Al White, who has been named head of Colorado’s tourism office by Gov.-elect John Hickenlooper.
McConnell ran for Congress in the 3rd District, losing the GOP primary to state Rep. Scott Tipton.
McConnell’s supporters waged a letter- writing contest on his behalf.
James Schlaver of Steamboat Springs sent a letter to Republicans critical of Jean White, saying she had never run for office before.
Others have complained to McConnell about the tone of the letters, particularly the attacks on Jean White.
“If you followed my congressional campaign you’ll know I never encourage personal attacks or negativity,” McConnell wrote to someone who complained.
