CarGo’s contract is a go. But his travel plans are not. Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez will not secure his visa until today, according to his publicist, delaying his flight to Denver for his physical until Sunday.
That leaves his examination tentatively set for Tuesday, the final hurdle to finalize his seven- year, $80 million contract.
“The delay is due to the visa process, but later in the week, all will be ready to travel to (sign) a pact with the Rockies,” publicist Fabiola Bohorquez tweeted Tuesday afternoon.
The Rockies confirmed Tuesday that Gonzalez will be flying to Denver this week, squashing any speculation that there’s a hang-up with the contract. Gonzalez’s new deal is likely to include a signing bonus of about $3 million, with a $1 million salary for the 2011 season. The biggest jumps will occur in the final three seasons, with the average annual value believed to be around $20 million.
Visa delays are common for Venezuelan players.
Helton encouraged.
Todd Helton’s back and leg strength has steadily improved this winter, leaving the first baseman encouraged with spring training right around the corner.
“I feel better. I am getting stronger,” said Helton, who is determined to rebound after hitting .256 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs last season.
Helton’s workouts have gone well. He has been able to squat and dead lift 225 pounds with no issue in recent weeks.
The Rockies admit they have a reduced playing schedule in mind for Helton this year, though they aren’t prepared to reveal it. A slightly reduced workload is more realistic with the signing of free agent Ty Wigginton.
“I have heard good things about him,” Helton said.
