A fire has heavily damaged a large community center in Frederick.

The fire was reported at the community center building of the Prairie Green subdivision at 5:12 a.m. today, according to Frederick-Firestone Division Chief Tim Zimmerman.

Zimmerman said the fire had already gone through the roof of the community center, 6201 Frederick Way, by the time the first units arrived at 5:18 a.m. The roof had partially collapsed.

Zimmerman said the fire required three alarms to bring under control.

A total of five fire departments and 40 firefighters were called to the scene.

Firefighters have not been able to enter the large structure but they don’t believe anyone was inside, said the fire department spokesman.

Zimmerman said that no other structures were threatened because the community building sits by itself surrounded by a large grassy lawn.

No firefighters or civilians were injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
