Wyoming quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels, the 2009 Mountain West freshman of the year and 2009 New Mexico Bowl offensive MVP, did not return to Laramie for the start of the spring semester. The school announced he will transfer with two years of eligibility remaining.

Wyoming does not have a returning quarterback with any experience. Carta-Samuels informed the staff of his decision Monday. There was no word on his immediate plans.

“I had met with Austyn at the end of the season. After our meeting, he had indicated he was excited to be a Cowboy and had already signed up for his spring lifting schedule,” Wyoming coach Dave Christensen said Monday in a statement. “While it is disappointing to our team and Wyoming fans . . . if you are in this business long enough as a coach, you face situations where young men choose to transfer.”

After passing for 1,953 yards and 10 TDs as a freshman in 13 games, he played in 11 games in 2010 with 1,702 yards passing and nine touchdowns. A dual-threat QB, he had 758 career yards rushing.
