A judge Thursday lowered to $25,000 the bail for a former CU football player accused of raping a 22-year-old woman last month.
Michael Sipili, 22, a University of Colorado senior and former linebacker for the Buffs, was officially charged with felony sexual assault during a brief hearing at the Boulder County Jail on Thursday afternoon.
Sipili’s public defender, Amanda Bailhache, argued that he wasn’t a flight risk because he flew back from Hawaii, where he was visiting family over CU’s winter break, to turn himself in. With an original bail of $100,000, Sipili has been in jail since his arrest Tuesday morning.
Bailhache said Sipili’s family in Hawaii has raised $5,000, so they should be able to secure his release if they work with a bondsman.
Boulder County Judge David Archuleta agreed to the bond reduction, but he ruled that Sipili will be on interim probation if he’s bonded out of jail.
