PORTLAND, Ore. — Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on both of his knees next week, and the team said there is no timetable for his return.

Roy has missed 16 games this season because of soreness in his knees, which he has said is caused by a lack of cartilage.

“I’m trying to do the best thing I can to get back on the floor,” Roy said Thursday. “We’ve been able to get a number of different opinions, and it’s something we’ve decided.”

Roy is averaging 16.6 points in 23 games.

Garnett returns to practice

WALTHAM, Mass. — Celtics center Kevin Garnett took part in full contact practice, his first team workout since straining his right calf Dec. 29.

Doc Rivers said Garnett participated in a little more than half the practice, going through plays and running up and down the court, but the coach ruled his star forward out for tonight’s home game against Charlotte.

“I want to see him another practice,” Rivers said, “but he’s getting close.”

Meanwhile, forward Jermaine O’Neal had an MRI on his sore left knee, and backup center Semih Erden missed practice with a groin pull.

Rivers is concerned that O’Neal may need surgery.

“Don’t know yet,” Rivers said. “Honestly, my guess is they’re going to have to do something.”
