BOULDER, Colo.—The U.S. Forest Service says strong winds reignited a prescribed burn near the area burned by a massive wildfire in the Boulder foothills in September.
The fire was reported around 4 a.m. Thursday between areas burned by the Fourmile fire and the small Peewink Mountain fire. The Forest Service said it spread to no more than a quarter acre.
The Forest Service burned slash piles there on Tuesday. Since then, some of the snow on the ground has melted and strong winds developed. The Forest Service said winds on Wednesday night were gusting up to 70 mph.
Sgt. Bill Crist told the Daily Camera that the fire burned mostly in the trees and spread very slowly.
The Fourmile fire destroyed 169 homes, making it the most destructive in Colorado history.
