BOULDER, Colo.—A Boulder councilman thinks the city should look at capping the number of medical marijuana cultivation centers it allows.
Councilman George Karakehian says the city doesn’t necessarily benefit economically from the 60 known cultivation centers.
City spokeswoman Sarah Huntley says sale tax for marijuana grown in Boulder but sold elsewhere goes to the city where the product is sold. The Daily Camera reports that city staffers recently said many dispensaries and growing centers aren’t properly remitting use taxes on their equipment.
Karakehian says he’s asked the city staff to explore whether Boulder can limit the number of growing operations.
Colorado voters in 2000 approved medical uses of marijuana. State regulations passed lats year give communities the power to regulate medical marijuana centers or prohibit them.
