AUSTIN, Texas — Michael Phelps beat Ryan Lochte in the final of the men’s 100-meter butterfly Friday night in the Austin Grand Prix.
Phelps won in 52.55 seconds. Lochte was second at 53.65.
Their anticipated showdown in the 200 freestyle didn’t happen because Phelps barely qualified for the “B” final and they did not race head to head. Lochte won the “A” final in 1 minute, 49.25 seconds. Phelps won the “B” final in 1:49.90.
Phelps is scheduled to race four more times today and Sunday. Phelps and Lochte could race against each other three times.
Katie Hoff won the women’s 200 free in 1:58.69, beating 15-year-old Missy Franklin of Regis Jesuit High School, who was second at 1:59.0. Franklin’s teammate on the Colorado Stars swim team, Jordan Mattern of Cherry Creek H.S., was eighth. Franklin and Mattern finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 100 butterfly.
Kourtney Fosse of Fairview H.S. was fifth in the 100 breaststroke.
Mackenzie Stein of Green Mountain H.S. was sixth in the 400 individual medley, and Bonnie Brandon of Cherry Creek was eighth.
Stein, Bridgette McNally, Margaret Burkhardt and Michelle Patton, swimming for the University of Denver Hilltoppers team, claimed fifth in the 400 free relay.
