Romulus Linney, 80, a playwright whose work ranged from stories set in Appalachia to the Nuremberg trials, died Saturday of lung cancer at his home in Germantown, N.Y., said his wife, Laura Callanan.

Linney, father of actress Laura Linney, wrote more than 30 plays. He had one play on Broadway, with most of his work appearing off- Broadway and in regional theater.

Susannah York, 72, has died of cancer in London, said her son, actor Orlando Wells. York had a string of leading roles in the late 1960s and was best known for her Oscar-nominated role in the 1969 hit “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” She also starred with Albert Finney in “Tom Jones” and played Christopher Reeve’s biological mother in the Superman series of movies.
